National Children's Book Week #5: Children's Choice Book Award Winners

The votes have been tallied and the numbers are in; America's young readers have spoken. The 2009 Children's Choice Book Award Winners have been selected. And the winners are:

K through 2 Book of the Year is The Pigeon Wants a Puppy by the talented and playfully irreverent Mo Willems. In this sequel, everyone's favorite bus-driving pigeon contemplates the responsibilities of pet ownership.

Grades 3 through 4 Book of the Year is Spooky Cemeteries by Dinah Williams. (These are the Children's Choice Awards, remember.)

Grades 5 through 6 Book of the Year is Thirteen by Lauren Myracle. This doesn't really appear to be literature, per se, but arguably, neither was Nancy Drew. (I still love The Hidden Staircase. Nancy was one tough chick. Nothing like a teenage girl who knows how to employ the powers of deductive reasoning.)

Teen Choice Book of the Year is, unsurprisingly, Breaking Dawn, the final book in the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer. Ms. Meyer also took the Author of the Year Award for the series which centers around the adventures of teen vampires, both virtuous and villainous, and the girl who loved them. (I know I'm dating myself here, but I have to be honest and say that The Lost Boys remains my most beloved teen vampire story. Twilight the movie was cool and everything, but Jason Patric is still my favorite reluctant vampire.)

And, finally, the Illustrator of the Year Award goes to one of our favorite author/illustrators, Jon J Muth for his work in Zen Ties:

A tale of kindness
Stillwater, the Panda, tells
with Koo, in haiku.

What about you? I know you have a favorite children's book around your house. Leave a comment here and you could win of three fantastic gift sets from Yoga by the Dozen. Read this for more details. I'll choose three lucky winners at random this weekend. Good luck!

Those pigeon books are a hoot! My kids laughed so hard every time we read the puppy one. Fun to read aloud, too. I like a book I can really get into.

Great giveaway. Haven't tried yoga with the kids but it sounds fun.
