Summertime and the Livin's Easy #4: Farmers' Markets

Yesterday's post about homemade gazpacho featuring red, ripe tomatoes got me all excited for our local weekly farmers' market. It's just getting started for the season and honestly, the way I feel about the opening of the farmers' market isn't unlike the way I felt as a kid on Christmas Eve.

The food is better, cheaper, greener than anything I can find in the supermarket. We eat better in the summer and early fall here than any other time of year. Maybe next year I'll throw a "Farmers' Market is Open" party...

There are hundreds and hundreds of farmers' markets across the country offering quality produce, herbs, eggs, milk, honey--and so much more, usually for less. Don't know of one near you? Check out Local Harvest, an online nationwide directory of farmers' markets. Search for a market near you, or near your next travel destination. Find market events, sign up for their newsletter, read their blogs or buy from them direct online.

Nothing says summer like a ripe tomato and a bunch of basil so fragrant that it perfumes the kitchen. Find a market, grab a bag and enjoy a summer morning near you.
